Ian Darwin: Free Crosswords

I've long been interested in trying to create crosswords, possibly for sale. I started writing my own crossword editing tool, but abandoned that after I discovered a much more complete software package called CrossFire that runs on all major computing platforms and handles much of the nitty-gritty of puzzle creation. I now use CrossFire for creating puzzles. Both CWEdit and CrossFire are written in the Java Programming Language. As well, I use PuzzleMe from AmuseLabs to let people play the puzzles online.

These are some early efforts that didn't make the cut for commercial use, and some that were created for a specific niche rather than for sale (the "Java" ones). I hope you find at least some of them fun.

P.S. If you've never tried making crosswords, it's fun, it's frustrating, and it's hard. But don't let that stop you!

If like me you are old-school and sometimes like to cross your words with pencil and paper, you can download these as PDFs and print them. Please respect my copyright; these are for personal use. If you like 'em enough to use commercially, please ask first.
